My First Stop Motion Project

A couple years back when I was still in school, I took a class that was all about stop motion animation. Now, in the class we were encouraged to use drawings and clay models for our stop motion work. Without a camera, my drawing/modelling skills are somewhat less impressive, so I opted to to a real-life stop motion instead. After two (sleepless) days of work, we came up with the following:

This was actually a really fun project to create. I had already decided that I would use a DSLR (my 40D at the time) with actual lighting. Also, the requirements according to the project outline were to file at a minimum of 12fps. I chose to do 24fps, just because I could. So, using a couple of Bowens Strobes, we put together this pretty awesome video. 2,400 frames later, we had about a minute and a half of random awesomeness. I hope you enjoyed it!

Have you ever created something similar? Share a link to yours in the comments, because I'd love to see it!

Walking along the Toronto Harbourfront in 2011, we came upon a group of BMX-ers who were taking advantage of the concrete benches. They had some pretty decent tricks.

Back at the very beginning of 2011, I went to New York with Melanie, and it turned out to be one of the coolest trips ever (see what I did there?). We visited the NBC studios earlier on in our trip, and bought a travel/tourist city pass type thing, which granted us entrance into a couple of other sightseeing attractions. On our last day there, we had still not used our ticket to the Top of the Rock, but we were determined to do so. The place was deserted. All of the employees told us the visibility was close to zero, and it would be a waste of our time. The way we saw it, it was a waste of our money if we didn't use it. So, taking a chance, we ventured to the top. The view was incredible - and the snowflakes were the size of quarters!

I wonder how many people actually use those telescope viewfinder type things at tourist attractions. I can imagine that once upon a time before the modern day zoom camera could reach lengths of 30x or even 50x optical zoom, they were quite popular. Now, they seem rather antiquated. With that said, they still look cool covered with snow.

While I can tell you for sure that I don't know a whole lot about cars, I can say for certain that I know how to appreciate their beauty. When I was younger, I had a Ferrari F50 model (I probably still do, somewhere) that I admired. It was a beautiful car, even if it was just a model that I pretended in my head was real. I also remember that the F40 looked kind of similar to the F50, but not identical. Unfortunately it I didn't see an F50 at the Auto Show, so the F40 will do.

It's a been a fairly busy weekend, having shot a wedding with my partner Melanie, and a bunch of social events. So, I'm pulling a photo from the archives for today. To my knowledge, this photo of Dan - a good friend of mine - hasn't been posted anywhere else before. This was taken at Wakestock back in 2010. We had media passes, and had an awesome time shooting the bands and wakeboarding. We even managed to get on the boats to capture the action from the water. Anyway, while this isn't necessarily the most flattering portrait, I still like it. It's Dan in his element, to be honest.

I'm fairly new to the world of bubble tea, so it's a bit of a treat when I go. Even if its ridiculously late at night, I always order the most spectacular thing on the menu. Usually it's full of enough sugar to rot my teeth and keep me awake for hours, but the payoff is just so worth it.

I had been out of the house all night at a networking event, but when I got home, some friends suggested we go out for bubble tea. It turned out that the bubble tea place wasn't exactly local. So, having my camera with me, and being bored in the back seat of the car, I found ways to entertain myself. Matt was kind enough to look at me at the exact moment I snapped a shot of the rear view mirror.
